ABOUT YOUNG WOMEN OF COLOR READ

Tate’s Consultant Services (TCS) and Tia Chucha’s Centro Cultural & Bookstore are happy to announce a new project, Young Women of Color Read (YWCR). The essay contest will be held every March during women’s history month. TCS is an organization that promotes academic success and literacy amongst young people of color. Its co-sponsor, Tia Chucha’s Centro, is a nonprofit cultural center and bookstore in Sylmar, California.

Eligible Participants

Annual Essay Contest

Eligible Participants: The Young Women of Color Read annual essay contest is open to 12th grade women students who are Black, Indigenous, and/or People of Color (BIPOC) and are enrolled in high schools in California.

YWCR Winners’ Financial Awards

Two winners will receive a financial award of $1,000 each.

Contest Deadline

The deadline is 12 noon, PST, March 31st. No late entries will be accepted.

YWCR Contest Essay Writing Prompt

Describe how your fiction or nonfiction book changed your views/perspectives or made you think differently about an issue.

Contest Criteria

♦ Students must be 14 years of age or older to participate.
♦ A BIPOC 12th grade woman student currently enrolled in a high school in California.
♦ Submission of a typed essay and a photo of you reading your selected book.

Entrant’s Essay Requirements

The typed essay should have the following:
♦ Answer the writing prompt. Include evidence from the text to support your perspectives and analyses.
♦ Include a brief summary of the book’s plot.
♦ The essay must be typed, double-spaced, 1 ½ pages minimum, and 2 pages maximum.
♦ At the top of the essay type your name, cell #, complete mailing address, and your school’s name.
♦ Submit a photo of you reading your selected book.

Young Women of Color’s Winners and Awards

♦ All Young Women of Color Read (YWCR) winners will be required to complete a Consent Form.
♦ The Consent Form must be signed by a parent and/or guardian and a 12th grade teacher or counselor of your choice.
♦ All winners will be notified by April 30th.
♦ Winners will receive their financial awards in May.
♦ Winners’ photos will be posted on the Young Women of Color Read (YWCR) website in May.
